Poems and Poetry

A Diamond Anniversary | A Poem by Donal Mahoney

They never held hands
when they were a couple
young and newly married
as much in love as they were
planning a wonderful life.

They’d walk down a street
side by side with serious faces
talking about the silliest things.
And if no one else was around
they’d laugh and sing.

Now they walk down a street
after 60 years together
side by side with serious faces
and if no one else is around
they sometimes laugh and sing.

They always hold hands
he with his cane and
she with her guide dog
deeply in love but too often
talking about the saddest things.
