Rollerskates | A Poem by Shelley Nutting

Rollerskates
in the hall closet,
that once traversed
the tarmac with
such grace,
resigned to be
a haven evermore
for spiders,
as you trade
them for a sleeker shoe
a better fit
for the newer
‘grown-up’ you.

I love this. The idea of “traversing the tarmac with grace” implies such a carefree experience. There’s also a subtle contrast between those rough-and-tumble rollerskates and the “sleeker shoe” that’s quite powerful.

Thank you Michael, written for my daughter’s transformation from young girl to young lady.
